With Veteran’s Day (2007) fast approaching, local Veterans groups have sought our Town leaders to light the Billerica Town Common’s American Flag that has gone unlit for many years. All veterans know that no flag should fly through the night without being proudly lit. Unfortunately with budget restraints and cutbacks it had not been economically feasible to perform such work with other important projects in need of the town’s resources. After speaking with the Chairman of the Board of Selectman Jim O’Donnell and many of our local members, some of whom are veteran’s themselves, Business Agent Lou Antonellis found that 103 members were more than willing to give back to the community and excited to volunteer to perform this work on their own time. On Saturday November 3rd Seventeen Local 103 members and Selectman O’Donnell spent the day trenching, digging, laying pipe and pulling wire to get the new spot lights on to Light the Flag. With so much enthusiasm and effort from so many volunteers we were able to complete more than just the Flag-Lighting. We also ran new pipes for circuits and Home runs for the upcoming Christmas Holiday lighting. The project was so successful and such a hit with the veterans and Town officials that the Members of Local 103 were honored at annual Holiday lighting ceremony and their children successfully threw the switch to turn on all the new lighting.
