Resort Casinos: Jobs for Our Members

The Massachusetts Legislature is considering bringing resort casinos to Massachusetts.  This will create thousands of new construction jobs and thousands more resort casino obs, generate nearly $500 million in new spending among small businesses, and grow our state's tourism, hospitality and convention and meeting sectors.  And the more than $400 million in new tax revenues generated by these resort casinos will also help fund and create thousands of more jobs for badly needed infrastructure improvements throughout Massachusetts 351 cities and towns.

Massachusetts residents spend more than $1 billion every year at the Connecticut casinos and Rhode Island racinos.  Those Massachusetts dollars alone in 2008 generated more than $211 million in tax revenues for Connecticut and Rhode Island state governments, and Massachusetts spending is directly responsible for creating nearly 8,000 jobs at the Connecticut casinos and Rhode Island racinos.  Resort casinos will bring those Massachusetts dollars back home where they belong --- creating Massachusetts jobs, generating Massachusetts tax revenues, providing millions in spending among Massachusetts small businesses, and revitalizing Massachusetts' tourism, hospitality and convention and meeting growth.

Subject: Resort Casino Support
Dear {%RecipientTitle%} {%RecipientLastName%},

As one of more than 7,500 members of I.B.E.W., Local 103, I strongly urge you to support open and honest debate on resort casinos to Massachusetts.  I further hope that you will cast a vote in support of our members by voting, “Yes,” on this critical economic development initiative.

In the midst of such a strong economic downturn – or as some would classify a full blown recession – it has never been more important to deliver new jobs and new revenue, not only in the short term but for the long term viability of our Commonwealth as well.  That is exactly Resort Casinos would accomplish.  For in addition to the tens of thousands of permanent jobs this plan creates, it also demands tens of thousands of construction jobs for the casinos, and tens of thousands more jobs on badly needed transportation infrastructure projects to be funded by the gained revenue of this plan.

Equally as important, in addition to the badly needed jobs created for working men and women throughout Massachusetts, this plan represents a long term economic stimulus solution that increases annual revenues to be dedicated to local aid, thus improving the quality of life for our members and their families.  Everyone knows this revenue is being generated right now from Massachusetts residents through similar casino resorts in neighboring states.  It is time to stop standing by as other states benefit on the backs of our residents, and look realistically at this obvious long term solution.

In closing, I wish to be very clear.  Resort Casino legislation is very important to the members of Local 103.  For the reasons outlined above, we all need this legislation to be debated and passed.  We appreciate the support of many legislators on initiatives important to us in the past, but recognize this plan as one of the most important economic stimulus vehicles to come before the legislature in a long time, proposed at a time when it is so desperately needed, now and into the future.  We hope you will be willing to stand with us to pass this proposal
